seeing photographs of vivian maiers mounds and mounds of newspapers and film got me thinking about some of the things i've held onto over the years..

what can I say.. one woman's trash truly is another woman's treasure.

I thought about going as a polaroid or a polaroid camera for halloween this year, but WOW... this artist has really taken the camera costume to the next level. amazing!

I'm so inspired. My polaroid related costume will have to wait till next year though..because I have something else in the works...

In 2003 I started this "Metallic Relics" series of reduction linoleum prints for my final project in class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I was drawn to these objects because of their beauty and the craftsmanship and materials used to create them. There is also a lot more knowledge, skill and patience involved in learning how to use tools like a manual camera. These are things that I feel that we're losing in this digital age.

Since i no longer have access to a printing studio, i use my ringer washing machine as a miniature printing press. When I'm traveling and don't have access to my press I hand burnish my prints using a wooden spoon.

Hot off the presses

I love everything about old cameras. I love the way they look, the way they sound as you click the shutter, and the way they feel in your hands.

This linoleum print is part of my "Metallic Relics" series. I used black etching ink on Japanese rice paper.

It can be purchased here: www.ladylotus.etsy.com
